Time waits for no “Person” so as we move on in life it is nice to know some benefits are available that reduce the cost of running our household finances as we reach retirement. Here are some details on allowances available to those who have reached this time in life.
Household Bills
Electricity allowance – Standing charges and 2,400 units per year
Gas allowance- December to May €123 allowance per bill
June to November € 57 allowance per bill
Under used allowances can carry forward to your next bill to a maximum of €150.
The maximum allowance per year is €540.
An allowance towards bottled gas is available but only for people who do not have a natural gas supply.
Free Television licence allowance - your TV Licence is free once you reach 66 years of age, Happy Birthday.
Travel Allowances
Once you reach 66 years young, you can avail of Free travel on Bus, Dart, Luas and Trains - services operated by Bus Átha Claith, Bus Éireann, Iarnrod Eireann, the Luas and even the Aran Island ferry service are Free to use.
DIRT -Deposit Interest Retention Tax
DIRT is deducted at 23% on the interest you earn on money on deposit. If you have a single income of €20,000 or below or married couple income of €40,000 or below then you are exempt from paying DIRT tax on the interest you earn on your savings.
Free Passport
Once you are over 65 you get your Passport for free.
Medical Care
Over 70’s can avail of the medical card but this is now means tested since the October 2008 Government budget. This provides the holder to free GP services, medicines and prescribed drugs, in- patient services in public hospitals, dental, aural and optical services.
